Paper Thickness

Printing and Design Terms

In printing, 14pt, 16pt, and similar terms refer to the thickness or weight of paper or card stock, measured in points. A point (pt) is a unit of measurement where 1 point equals 1/1000th of an inch (0.001 inches). Therefore:

  • 14pt paper is 0.014 inches thick.
  • 16pt paper is 0.016 inches thick.

These measurements are commonly used to describe the thickness and sturdiness of paper stock, especially for materials like business cards, postcards, flyers, and brochures. Here's a general guide to their uses:

Common Paper Thicknesses

  • 14pt: A standard thickness for durable postcards, business cards, and marketing materials. It feels sturdy but is flexible enough for general use.
  • 16pt: Thicker and more robust than 14pt, offering a premium feel. Often used for high-quality business cards and postcards.
  • 18pt or 20pt: Even thicker and more rigid, providing a luxurious touch. These are often used for specialty marketing materials or invitations.

The choice between 14pt, 16pt, and other thicknesses depends on the desired durability, feel, and purpose of the printed product. For instance, a thicker stock like 16pt or 18pt is ideal for making a strong impression, while thinner stocks may be used for more cost-effective projects.
